Veneers

Are your teeth discoloured, chipped, wonky, or otherwise appear abnormal? Assuming the issue is purely cosmetic and has no underlying health concern, you should consider dental veneers. Here at Southfield Dental Practice, we offer dental veneers at our clinic as one of our excellent cosmetic treatment options.

And our dentists also provide general dental care, so you can maintain a healthy smile. We’re a private practice based in Ringwood that first opened its doors in 2016. Our clinic is built on more than 40 years’ experience, so you can trust you’re in safe and capable hands. What are Dental Veneers and Their Types?

We’ve all looked into the mirror at one stage or another and noticed something off about our teeth. Perhaps your teeth have become stained, or one has become slightly crooked. Or maybe you’ve noticed gaps, or a tooth has become chipped. Such issues can affect your smile, but what can you do about them?

Teeth whitening is a method for removing stains, but the results aren’t always what you’d hope for. You could try orthodontics to fix crooked teeth, but this takes time, is uncomfortable, and is dependent on how you feel about braces. Fortunately, there’s an easier fix – dental veneers.

Dental veneers are a treatment we offer at our clinic that’s purely cosmetic. They create the illusion of perfect teeth without the laborious process of whitening your teeth or wearing a brace. They are, in a nutshell, custom-designed shells of tooth-like ceramic material that’s applied over the surface of your teeth.

Once applied, they cover up worn tooth enamel, uneven alignment or spacing, and chips or cracks, giving the appearance of perfect teeth. There exist two types of veneer with a third option of sorts also available:

  • Porcelain
  • Ceramic
  • Removable

Note that veneers tend to be fitted but there is the option for ones that can be taken out if this is preferable.

Porcelain Dental Veneers

Porcelain dental veneers are the standard option for covering discoloured, damaged, or irregularly shaped teeth. We offer porcelain dental veneers here at Southfield Dental Practice, representing the ideal way to restore your smile. First, we remove a thin layer of enamel from the tooth or teeth in question.

This is necessary to ensure that the veneers sit correctly. Next, we’ll take an impression and note the shade of your tooth/teeth. This information will be sent to the laboratory where your veneers will be made. Using resin cement, the veneers will bond to your tooth/teeth. Porcelain veneers are made using a natural tooth-coloured porcelain material.

So, once they’ve been fitted, you won’t be able to tell the difference between the veneers and your natural (healthy) teeth.

Porcelain dental veneers are far more resistant to staining and chipping than composite veneers. They are also better suited to patients with teeth that are severely stained or very crooked, or badly chipped.

Composite Dental Veneers

The second type of dental veneers is composite veneers. Also known as bonded veneers, composite veneers are an additive process that’s fully reversible. What this means is that they can be removed and replaced as required. While composite veneers are more prone to staining and chipping than porcelain veneers, they’re far easier to fix.

Composite veneers last around five to ten years and can be polished and smoothed to achieve the same natural aesthetic as porcelain veneers.

Removable Veneers

Removable dental veneers are a relatively new treatment option taking the world by storm. While regular dental veneers must be bonded to your teeth, removable dental veneers can be inserted and removed at your leisure. Our dentists won’t need to prepare the tooth structure, and there will be no need for dental injections.

Plus, as you can remove your veneers at home, it makes keeping your teeth and gums clean a lot easier. Remember, veneers only cover over what’s there, they don’t replace your teeth, so cleaning is still important for maintaining a healthy smile.

Check Out the Procedure and Cost for Dental Veneers

Before proceeding, you should remember that dental veneers are no substitute for good dental care. They merely cover over what’s there, and your natural teeth and gums are still present underneath. That means good dental hygiene is still essential. Also, any underlying issues will still be present, too. So, dental veneers aren’t for everyone.

If you think that dental veneers may be the way to improve your smile, call Southfield Dental Practice to make an appointment at our clinic. One of our dentists will examine your teeth and offer their professional opinion on whether veneers would be the right option for you. We always prioritise preserving your natural teeth for as long as possible and will consider carefully whether veneers will benefit this goal or hamper it.

Should the underlying cause require more appropriate dental care, we’ll recommend an alternative treatment. However, if the issue is purely aesthetic, we’ll usually recommend veneers. During your first visit to our clinic to have veneers fitted, our dentists will prepare the teeth using a ‘burr’. This roughens the surface of the teeth so the veneers will adhere.

Next, the dentist will take a mould of your teeth and note the shade of your teeth. The mould and shade detail will be sent to a laboratory where the veneers will be made.

You’ll then be required to return, usually in around two to four weeks, so the dentist can fit the veneers. Special resin cement is used to bond the veneers to your teeth. The Southfield Dental Practice team will only cement your veneers in once you and our dentist are 100% satisfied with them.

The cost of new veneers will usually be around several hundred pounds, and the good news is that we can offer various finance options for any treatments that exceed £500.

Our Maintenance Plans enable you to pay monthly. In exchange, you receive a set number of yearly examinations and hygienist visits and diagnostic x-rays. You pick how much you wish to pay each month, and when you take out a plan, you’ll benefit from spreading the cost of routine treatment and receiving up to 10% off other dentistry procedures.

Plus, you get access to insurance cover for dental trauma, worldwide emergency, and out-of-hours emergency callouts. Lastly, you get access to a 24-hour dental helpline.
